Ditchling Primary School and their soil/worm project were awarded 2nd place
Mid Sussex Science Week (MSSW) took place at Haywards Heath College on Friday 12th July, where primary schools from Mid Sussex, predominantly Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath came to showcase their fantastic STEM projects to a panel of judges. Organised by BSE|3D with the support of BHBPA, Mid Sussex Science Week is a free STEM event for local primary schools in the Mid Sussex area aimed at inspiring the next generation. Mid Sussex Science Week ignites curiosity, inspires innovation and celebrates the incredible world of science and GD Rectifiers was thrilled to be a part of it this year.
Mid Sussex Science Week 2024
The Chairman of MSSW, Phil Todd, officially opened the event by welcoming our primary schools, STEM Ambassadors, judges and exhibitors. Recognition was given to the STEM Hub.
Eight primary schools were in attendance this year with each school was judged twice by two sets of judges for 20 minutes across two rooms.
GD Rectifiers’ Managing Director Paul Bentley was one of the panel judges in room 1 and had the pleasure of judging some fantastic projects by Ditchling, Bolney, Harlands and Warden Park Primary Schools.

Local businesses exhibited in the exhibition hall, including HPC, ESRAS and Edwards Vacuum. There was even a Volkswagen car that Caffyns Plc brought along with custom artwork provided by all the children.
In the afternoon the judges deliberated and announced the winners followed by an incredible science show.

1st place – Southway Junior School for their ‘Air powered car’ project
2nd place – Ditchling Primary School for their ‘How do worms and soil help prevent climate change?’ project
3rd place – St Wilfrid’s Primary School for their ‘Solar oven’ project

“We had a truly inspiring day at Mid Sussex Science Week, where I had the honour of judging some very talented, enthusiastic and knowledgeable Year 5 s and 6s from 8 local primary schools.
It’s days like these that make me so excited and hopeful for the next generation of scientists, engineers and other STEM ambassadors. The future is bright, and this event plays a crucial role in highlighting all of the fantastic careers our STEM industries has to offer.”
