Discover the three 2023 NEC updates impacting safety and cybersecurity
The 2023 National Electric Code (NEC) by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has been helping to solve some of the world’s toughest safety problems for more than 125 years. The 2023 NEC is full of updates designed to improve electrical safety across commercial and residential projects. To help keep customers compliant, GD Rectifiers highlights the top three changes you need to know.
2023 NEC updates
- Improved clarity for service disconnect safety
Updates have been made to the NEC section 230.71 to improve clarity and address safety concerns related to service entrance equipment, specifically for line side barriers on service disconnects. The changes have been made to reduce the risk of accidental contact with energised parts.

2. Cybersecurity needed for remotely accessible circuit breakers
The 2023 NEC has been updated under Section 240.6(D) which now states that circuit breakers and associated software for remotely adjusting settings shall be listed and identified as being evaluated for cyber security. This new section intends to protect networked devices from cyber attacks.

3. New requirements for systems connected to critical power systems
The 2023 NEC includes two new requirements to address cyber security concerns for systems that are connected to a communication network and have the capability to permit control of any portion of the premises’ critical operation power system, covered under Section 708.7.
