Thyristors

Typical applications include motor control, power converters and AC power controllers

A thyristor is a complex four layer semiconductor device, featuring alternating P-type and N-type materials. Discrete thyristor devices usually have three electrodes; an anode, cathode and electrode, also known as the gate.

Discrete thyristors are used to control alternating currents where the change of polarity of the current causes the device to switch off automatically, often referred to as “zero cross” operation.

Devices using alternating current can be turned on and off by sending a signal to the control gate by using a gate turn-off (GTO) thyristor. Thyristors are extremely useful when switching applications because they can be fully on or off. This two-state capability differs from MOSFETs, which operate in between on and off states, waiting for a signal to conduct current.
